Hey all ....

Here's the deal:

Compaq Presario 5000 with AMD Athlon processor, 512Mb RAM (32 set for the on-board AGP), 80Gb IDE.

The machine powers down on its own every hour or so. No events in the log (other than the standard Event Service Has Started). I have removed the NIC and Modem (both PCI), used MSCONFIG to disable all progs on startup (not much as I just wiped and reinstalled). All XP patches/updates are installed.

I have also replaced the power supply with a known good (first thing I did).

Next step is to yank the drive and scan it for virii in another machine.

If anyone has seen this before, please email me!

Thanks in advance.

Figured it out

I think .... Overheating processor. The time stamps are very regular (going by the System Event Log --> Event Service start time) .... It is just too regular for power fluctuations .... I've got a new chip on order .....
