After some help if possible. My laptop when switched on won't get beyond the user/password screen. Where it normally has my name for me to password under, there is nothing, just the background. The screen blinks as if something is about to happen, but ultimately nothing does.

When I hold the power button to switch off, the text that comes in seems to be in wingdings of all fonts.

Before this happened, I had been messing around with registry entries, the HKEY stuff? I was following instructions to do a full removal of Firefox and fear I may have done some damage there. It's all I can think of anyway.

I've ran start-up and disk tests and everything is OK here apparently.

Any help much appreciated.

There was no need to mess with the Registry for Firefox removal, just Add-Remove Programs is sufficient. Rarely is it a good idea to go messing with the Registry.

Perform a Repair Install by following this tutorial:

Thanks for the reply. For that however you need to be able to log on, and also have a windows 7 installation disc which I can't find.
