So I have here a Compaq Presario 1830 laptop. The harddrive recently died and was replaced. Worked fine for about a day, and now as soon as it is powered on, the screen displays an array of large solid colored blocks, then flickers and shows them in different positions, then has a ton of lines, and then continues in displaying strange color patterns.


It reacts the same way when connected to a normal monitor, so I'm assuming it's a problem with the video adapter, but I was wondering if anyone recognizes this.

Try reseating the RAM. Might work.
