This is a known problem on HP/Compaq laptops -- the built-in wireless device fails. Something to do with poor quality of the wireless chip. On my daughter's Compaq, the wireless light stays orange and no way will it turn green even though it's slider switch is set to 'on'. This despite the fact that it's still listed in Device Manager with no error.
My fix was to buy her one of those plug-in USB wireless dongles. It sticks out a bit awkwardly but at least it works. We will never buy another HP or Compaq computer after this - even the laptop case is shoddy and flimsy compared to other brands, but on reflection it was considerably cheaper than others too. But false economy as it turns out.
Compare that with my son's Packard Bell laptop. He's dropped it (twice) from the top bunk but it refuses to die. Everything still works, including the wireless, after four years of ownership by a careless boy! Kudos to Packard Bell.
