COA and a re-install

869 Views 1 Reply 2 Participants Last post by  Chevy
I'm thinking about selling my laptop and keeping one I have for re-sale.

I've installed XP pro, but have a XP home sticker. I activated pro via phone and I'm afraid when I re-install it wont let me re-activate. I don't have the system disk for this laptop.

How does MS work when it comes to this?

Should I have written down the activation code?

Thanks for the help in advance

Teh XP PRo you installed, was it legit? Also, was it a retail box, or an OEM version?

The XP Home is forever tied to that laptop. The XP Pro, if OEM, is also tied to it. If it is a retail box XP Pro (no sticker, the Product ID is in the three-fold booklet that the cd was in) then you can remove it from the laptop and install it elsewhere.

AFA the restore media for the laptop, contaqct the manufacturer - they usually offer a replacement set at a reasonable cost (Compaq comes out to about $25 including shipping).
