Which is better:

8600 GT 256mb GDDR3

or

8600 GT 512mb GDDR2

notice the difference in the DDRs. I heard there's no point in getting the 512mb one since the DDR2 doesn't run it at its full potential or something simiar

Go with the 8600 GT 256mb GDDR3, as 256mb is plenty and your benefit from the faster internal memory clock speeds.
