chkdisk on boot

2535 Views 7 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bicycle
Every time the machine is booted either a cold boot or reboot it has to go through a chkdisk. And whenever you try to do a defrag it will not let you and says that a chkdisk needs to be done first. I think I have removed all malware, spyware and trojans. And I ran registry mechanic. So I really don't know what else to do. This is a gateway running xp pro service pack 2, intel 4, 2.4 ghz prosessor, and 256 mb ram. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks for any help.

Hi redfish36117, try running chkdsk with some switches such as:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
cmd
- Click OK
- At the flashing cursor, type:
chkdsk /r /f c:
- Click Enter
- Press Y then Enter
- Press Y then Enter again

Reboot and post back if that helps or not please :)
Thanks I tried, but it only gave me one question and I hit y. Then exited
and rebooted and still had to run the chkdsk.
Ok that's normal that it would chkdsk on the reboot as you have instructed it to do so but the switches you added would attempt to repair/fix any problems it found on the disk.

Try rebooting again please. If the same happens again, it may be an idea to download the hard drive manafacturer's diagnostic tools and run some tests on the hard drive.

Also, in the mean time, you could have a look in your event log for any errors that relate to the drive, I/O errors, paging errors etc:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
eventvwr.msc
- Click OK
- Expand the System section to look for errors

Hope that helps :)
Also, please confirm that the Command Prompt confirmed the chkdsk /r /f would take place.

Should look something like the following image:

Want to try this?

STOP CHKDSK FROM RUNNING AT EACH BOOT. Start> Run> type: cmd then hit OK.
At the command prompt, type: chkntfs /d then hit Enter.
Restart your computer.
Thanks so much. It is fixed. After actually running a scan disk and rebooting
it no longer gives the chkdsk at boot up. Again thank you.

Great to hear you got the problem fixed. These consarn machines can be aggravating at times.
