I have a MSI motherboard, and the fan over my chipset started messing up a maybe 6 months ago. A month ago or so when I played the Fear demo, my HD crashed and I had to "0 Fill" my seagate drive with the help of the seagate tech support. He did not conclude what the problem was, and I reinstalled windows and Ive still been playing games and such with no real problems. Now Im planning on getting fear the game for real and before I get it I want to consider if this dead fan is causing problems. I havent really thought about it, but im guessing its been dead for a month or more.

So im wondering What my options are with this. Is it something ciritical to be fixed? Can i buy a new fan in store and install it?

Just un-screw the fan on the heatsink, then bring the fan to a local electronics store or to a computer shop to see if they have a fan just like the size that you have.. Once you got one, screw it back and you are up to go...

That fan not running is causing instability in your system, and probably why your game died on you :(

Did you try just cleaning it first? I find a good de-dusting and a tiny drop of household oil under the sticker where the little axle is enough to bring back a fan many a time :)

I tried to unscrew it, and it wont unscrew at all. I see that you can unhook it and take off the whole heatsink+fan but I dont want to do that yet, as I guess i cant eaisly put it back on. Is there any other way to get the fan off?

That fan should unscrew right off the heatsink... you just can't get a good enough bite on the screwhead? I use the little prescision screwdrivers, they get a decent bite in there, might be worth a shot. If not, a whole new assembly may in order, but it SHOULD unscrew.
