Hi there. I couldn't see another thread on this issue.

I recently bought a DVD R/W drive and installed it with only minor problems (it ran sluggishly). To try and check whether the interface cable was causing the problem I replaced it. When I turned my computer on again it failed to find both the master then the slave hard drives. It finished up with a request for a boot disc.

Now both the old cable and the new one produce this result. I'm currently running my machine with the DVD drive disconnected.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

None of the pins are bent on any of the DVD player's sockets (or the interface socket on the motherboard).

I don't know anything about the dma speed check you mention (despite a bit of web searching ;))

Whoops, forgot to thank you. That fixed it. I was attaching the eide cable incorrectly it seems - and the sluggishness was down to the dma being disabled. Cheers man.
