Hello TSF

I have a laptop that is running XP Professional SP3. (Fujitsu Siemens – Amilo L7300)
The drive that is on this laptop states "DVD ROM. Compact disc recordable. ReWritable"

It plays Music CDs just fine, and reads data CDs too.
Data DVDs it usually reads, but it is a bit flaky.
playing a DVD in this laptop is a no go completely. it will recognize the DVD and ask do i want to play it etc, but when it dos start to play, nothing, just random lines of colour and the title music plays...

another annoying thing is that it will never burn a Data or Music CD no matter what software i use
(Nero, Windows Media, Windows itself and some other free stuff i got from Filehippo.com)

Any ideas?...

not entirely sure what you mean but i guess your talking about the random colours/lines and the music plays?

Well music CDs play fine, no lines or weird things happen.
DVD movies it happens to always and data DVDs open and read perfectly when they are seen by the laptop.

That means all that follows are true (kindly check and correct as needed):

• Drive opens/reads data DVD - no noticeable problem on the screen
• Drive opens/reads data CD - no noticeable problem on the screen
• Drive plays audio/music DVD - no noticeable problem on the screen
• Drive plays audio/music CD - no noticeable problem on the screen
• Drive plays movie CD - colored lines show/weird things happen on screen
• Drive plays movie DVD - colored lines show/weird things happen on screen

If each of the above is correct, then IMO it is safe to say you have no problems with the CD/DVD drive as it can read/play data and audio/music media (CD or DVD). I suggest you try another media player like WMP or VLC

That's all correct except for "Drive plays movie CD - colored lines show/weird things happen on screen" a movie CD plays just fine, but the DVD problems is still happening.

Ill try different apps and get back with the results :smile:

I suggest you also try playing the movies with an external monitor. If problem is still present while playing DVD/CD movies and using an external monitor then it could be a malfunctioning video driver (or worse a failing video card).
