I have a Dell Dimension DIM2400, XP Home Edition. Version 2002 w/ service pack3. Device Manager sees the CDROM and says it is working properly, but it is not. CDROM/DVD is a TSST corp CDRW/DVD TSH492B. It will play a music CD once in a while, but when I put in a program CD or a picture CD and go to the "D" drive on my computer, it shows nothing on the CD. I went through all the trouble pages w no fix. I did the driver updates and it says I am current. Thanks for your time.

You can try deleting/removing the device from Device Manager and rebooting. You can also try deleting/removing the the IDE controllers and rebooting. However, since it appears to work "sometimes", most likely it is just failed/failing and needs to be replaced.

I agree with Dogg

Having had problems with DVD/CD drives in the past I've noticed that tests such as device manager only seem to test the software and driver, not the physical thing.

Try a lens cleaner, you never know.

If this doesn't improve things then either your laser or drive motor is failing. That's my bet anyway.
