CD/RW problem

Using an HP 7970 Pavilion desk top with XP sp2. It has a Mitsumi CR-48X5TE that suddenly stopped reading and burning cd's. When I put a cd in and close the carrier, the light will be green as it is trying to read the disc, but then
begins to flash amber. When I try to access the drive through `run m:'
it gives a message to "please insert disc" I cannot run my cd
cleaning disc on it as it requires reading track 2 to clean. Also, when trying to burn a cd, media player gives me a message "Cannot burn this cd - try another brand cd or a slower burn speed."

I have tried deleting the driver and re-booting, I blew it out with canned air. This drive came standard in my HP 7970. A pretty competant tech I know said "Clean the device 5 or 6 times and it should work." How else can one clean the device? Will this actually fix the problem?

the laser may have gone, they are cheap to buy,you can pull the drive out and remove the case and clean the laser by hand,be careful not to scratch it and not to knock it out of alignment
try it in another computer first
also if you havent tried this yet, simply change the cable. these symptoms could be a result of a bad cable too.
