how's it going,

this is my first post. my cd-rom just stopped working and I was wandering what could be the problem. I was searching on a cd and tried to take it out, but the door would not open. I stuck a pen in the hole to open it manually and took the cd out. Ever since then the cd-rom hasn't worked.

I did the usual things, went in device manager uninstalled it then rebooted. Win 2000 found new hardware and installed it. That didn't work. Then I took out the cd-rom booted up to see if Win 2000 would not see it at all, then reinstalled it and it still does not work. Does anyone have a clue has to what the problem could be.

Thanks

It could be that the drive has actually failed. I think I'd try a new drive, or try this drive in another computer to eliminate that likely possibility.

It sounds like the CD ROM is fried (very technical term, I know). New ones these days are very inexpensive. But, I gaurantee you that if you go to buy a new one, you will see the CD-RW on the shelf and end up with one of those. Happened to me. No self control.

how do you mean "it doesn't work" ? the drive tray won't open ? or it fails to read the disk ? check the tray hasn't come off the runners, also try right clicking the drive in "my computer" and clicking eject, worked for me in the past when it got stuck.
