CD-Rom not responding

1609 Views 6 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Tanteadena
My Aunt gave me her computer to try and fix. It's a HP 4550Z, Win 98, Pent II.
The cd-rom does not function. There is an exclamation mark under the CD controller. It's a Mitsumi CD-Rom Controller w/ 2x Speed.
The Device Status:
This device is either not present, not working, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10).

The drive door opens and closes but that all that functions.

Any ideas?

Thank you
Andrea

hmm

welcome.

try checking to see if the wide ribbon cable is partway unplugged.

if that doesnt do it it might be a faulty drive.

let us know what you find out.

Dear Bob,

That was the first step that I took. Opened the case, unplugged, replugged. Same thing.
Canned aired the drive, lol and now just awaiting a response.

Thanks

Go into device manager and un-install it then reboot. If it still doesn't recognize it as being there you should probably replace it.
Thanks Speedo,

Been there, did that. I guess that I have to buy a new CD-Rom for her.

Thanks
Andrea
If you are in the states you can get 52x CDRWs for $9 (sometimes free) after rebates at stores like OfficeMax, Best Buy, CompUSA....I would go that route.
I do appreciate everybodies help!!
Thank you!!

I was going to look in the ads and get one for my Aunt and one for my Mom & Dad as long as I was going to be opening cases, lol.

Once again, Thanks!!!

Regards,
Andrea
