CD ROM icon disappearing act!

1696 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  peef
Recently my CD-ROM icon was not showing up (in "My Computer"). It happened intermittently at first. Then my CD-RW icon stopped showing up. I could not use either drive. I confirmed that the hardware was working by booting using a CD.

After speaking with Dell tech support, I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows. Everything worked good for about 24 hours, and then... doh! The CD-ROM icon disappeared!

I don't know what could be causing this (it never happened before...). Are there any ideas for how to fix/prevent this problem?

Here is my machine specs:
Dell Dimension 2400
2.4 Ghz Pentium 4
512 MB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition SP2
Samsung CD-R
Samsung CD/RW

Thanks!

try replacing the cdrom cables and see if that helps bring back the life of the cdroms.
Which cables? The ones to the power supply (which I recently replaced) or to the motherboard?

When I opened the computer, I noticed that I had the power supply hooked up to both my CD-ROM and CD/RW devices through a single cable spliced together leading to the power supply. I unhooked the cable from the CD-ROM and hooked up a different cable (my new power supply has tons of cables...).

Might this have been the cause--having two CD-ROM devices hooked to a single, spliced cable to the power supply?

Thanks
