I am trying to install win98. When i boot from the cd if i choose the setup option or start computer with cd rom support, the system hangs when it gets as far as installing the oak technology driver.... "device name : oemcd001". Same thing happens when i try to use a cd installation utility from a floppy disc. Also tried a different cd rom drive. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Peter

Make sure that your the controller in the bios is set to auto for ide mode (ie. dma,udma). Sounds like something is not coming back correctly from the cdrom.

Are you using a 40 wire ide cable and is the cdrom setup on the secondary ide controller?

Try these and post more info.

Edit your config.sys file and autoexec.bat
dohh.......
Try changing:
device=\oakcdrom.sys /d:eek:emcd000 blah blah blah
or
devicehigh=blah blah blah
to:
device=\oakcdrom.sys /d:mscd000
lastdrive=z

Change the oemcd000 to mscd000 in the autoexec.bat file also.

If you can, post the config.sys and autoexec.bat files from your boot disk. I can help you better after seeing them.

editing. You are booting from cd. Should've paid more attention.

Can you make a bootable floppy to try with?

Actually, you might want to set the BIOS to PIO only mode for the CD, sometimes DMA will lock things up, depending on the driver...
