I'm working on a Sony Vaio PCG-GR170K for a friend. He wanted to upgrade the hard drive. I got a bigger one--but I didn't get a Sony brand, I got a Hitachi 40GB.

I put the new HD in and it doesn't seem to be recognized by the BIOS, however the HD light on the computer blinks as it normally would.

Further, the CD drive stops working when the hard drive is in place (the BIOS doesn't register that either--but it does register it when the HD is not in).

Any one done any work on Sony Vaios? Appreciate the help...

I would first check the connections and the jumpers. Then I would clear the cmos. Take the batery out for 15-20 mins or look for the cmos reset jumper on the motherboard. Go back to your bios and check if everything seems to be recognized if not try to do it manually.
