CD/DVD ROM Problem

I have lost my designated drive letters. They are recognized as HP DVD Writer 300n and ASUS CD 5480/AH. The first clue somthing was wrong when I tried to burn a cd and I got an error in the burning telling me the process wasnt able to be compleated. I found this to be odd so I just tried it again thinking maybe it
was some one time thing, (with a different cd) and got the same problem, at that time I was burning a data cd so I tried again to burn an audio cd using a
different program, (the first was the windows writeable folder, the second was
windows media player) but it wasnt showing a drive and by then I knew there was somthing wrong, so I shut down the computer and tried again. Again no drive letters and I look in the Device Manager and it shows the Hp DVD Writer is
disabled, try to enable and it doesnt work. I checked the cords in the back of
the dvd rom after shutting it down and everything was secure. Please help me.

uninstall it from the device manager and reboot and see if it is ok after windows reinstalls
i lost both th e dvd rom drive and the dvd burner. it did not come up when you clicked on "My Computer". i got help from compaq, not over the phone(no help there, someone in India), but i used their online realtime help. there's a simple fix(a small computer program), or you can do it manually by deleting 2 items from your registry. i forget what they were. you should back up your registry before you do this. they walked me through this online. it was real smooth. later i found the program on somebody's web sight(i forgot it also),that deletes the two items automatically. the whole problem started when i was started to burn something with a program running in the background. i pressed cancel to stop the burn and lost the drivers for both drives. it's a simple fix once you find the technique. it's out there it took me a while to track it down.
