I am having a problem that i have seen other people have.... in fact a lot of people have had this problem it looks like. Yet, sad as it sounds I haven't found anyone who knows the solution.
I have two cd drives, one this is DvD-Rom, another that is CD-RW. I had Windows ME when i got this computer, everything worked fine, as far as the drives go. when i moved to XP, things were still fine... until the first problem I had.
The CD-RW would show up under the device manager and My computer, but would NOT read from any disc of any type, and programs like Roxio, WinAmp, Windows Media Player etc. would not read things either, "NO DISK FOUND" or something of that nature. as much as this was a pian i could live with it. i contacted compaq/hp and they had me jump through many hoops to try and solve the problem... and of course they couln't solve it. (neither could i, so i'm not complaining)
a few months pass, i still can't figure out the promblem, but i get over it... I try a few other things. nothing really of any consequence to tha machine. but they did have me delete the ToUpper, and ToLower registry entries... regedit always scares me...
but the biggest problem was yet to come. about a month ago i popped a cd into the DvD drive to listen to some tunes. nothing happened. i thought that was strange so i checked the my computer... there were no cd drives even listed. quite furious i tried a few things.. nothing worked, restored my computer to earlier dates at which it worked and it still didn't work. i tried hp, and they seemed to know something about this problem - GREAT! well actually, no they couln't help me. so i emailed them... no they didn't know anything other than what was on that page.

i tried one last thing, i unhooked all the cables that were on the drives.. the ribbon, and power. also i took the ribbon out of the mother board and fired it up... the machine didn't say anything was missing... whatever, i put them all back in and fired it up again hoping that the plug and play would find it... nope.

so now i have to sit back and hope that maybe anyone here may have an answer. i do know i few languages... cpp being the only really useful one... and asp, but thats another ballpark

thanks
and sorry for any of the spelling/grammar/anything else errors
ps i thanik that the problem is that the computer is not reading anything in to the motherboard. is there anyway that i can check is bios/post is getting anything from those drives..? (compaq hides it)

Welcome to the boards mme! Do you have access to another machine? If so try those optical drive in it...see if it recognizes them. If it does, try getting a couple new IDE cables and trying those and changing them to master/slave from "cable select".
BTW, are both of them on the same IDE channel?

Midnight Tech and I both suggested the same thing, since mme5 didn't add that he tried my suggestion to his recent thread, I asumed he double posted.

Sorry, Drupy:confused:

How's the drives set up? Which one's master? I've never seen that kind of a problem, though. You might have a bad drive. Just my best guess, though.:sigh:
