I was in the middle of burning a cd, and my computer went into lock. It spit out the cd, and since then, will not recognize any cd i put in, whether it's blank, burned, or has any type of media on it. It sounds like it's trying to read, but then fails after about 30 seconds of spinning. It's on a gateway notebook, so installing a new one would be my last choice, as I have no clue how to take one of them apart. Any advice?

It sounds like the drive has failed. They're not really hat difficult to change out.
If you post the model number, someone can probably help you.
