Capture programe (freeware)-suggestions?

i recently got a instrument to convert my vhs to computer -but need a programe (free) that will record in (avi) anybody have a good suggestion for me?? or good idea how to record in avi?
appreciate any suggestions.

Which device is it? Some require proprietary software to work.

it's (pinnacle)710-usb. kinda old but works, also someone suggested windows movie maker---does that record in avi?? cause i tried it yesterday and it seems like everthing is in wmv--is thier a way to change files to avi??

While TSF is a really great forum, one of the best forums I have found for video/multimedia is VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists They have lots of experts in the field and also have a site that has hundreds of programs you can browse through to find what you need.
