Can't write to Toshiba External HD from 2nd Comp

I have a Toshiba External HD. I set it up to backup one of my laptops. It works great with this laptop.

When I plug it into a second laptop, I get a message saying: "Cannot copy <name of file>. The disk is write-protected. Remove the write-protection or use another disk.

How do I remove the write-protection?

What version is your operating system ?
Windows XP on both computers.

The model of the external HD is HDDR500E03X. I can change the properties of the external HD when it's plugged into the first computer but there's no option for turning off write protection/read only.

Thanks in advance for your help.
What software & version is doing the backup ? Something supplied on the Toshiba External HDD ? XP wouldn't prevent you from writing to the ext drive I suspect the Backup Program may have the drive locked or will only associate it with the initial computer it was setup on.
