Hi everyone, I've had this problem where I cannot update certain software. Ex. AVG and Spybot will not find an internet connection on my PC although there obviously is one. If I go into Safe Mode w/ Networking I can update.

AVG will give me the following error: "An automatic connection to the internet could not be established."

While Spybot will just attempt to connect and tell me immediately that they're no new updates.

I'm able to browse fine, I've ran all critical updates, and the rest of the PC seems to work perfectly.

Thanks.

Welcome to TSF.

I just want to make sure that it's not spyware that is blocking those security sites while you are in normal mode. Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

HJT Results

Thanks for the quick reply. I ran HJT and looked around the log for something funny. The first thing I saw was the service vsmon from Zone Labs' Zone Alarm which I had shutdown a couple of days ago. I was able to stop it from automatically starting and everything's back to normal regarding the downloads, however, I've been booted offline twice where I've had to reboot. I've attached the log to see if you can notice anything that shouldn't be there (srd.exe?).

PS. I also shutdown the ge****c.exe service b/c I wasn't sure what it was and there was no description for it in the services window.

Thanks again.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it’s clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

Could you right click on the following files and see if they are from Microsoft or not?:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ge****c.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\srd.exe

For the first one, just go into the system32 folder and look for something that starts with ge and has 4 other characters in the middle that ends with an e. I think you are seeing the asterisks because TSF (TechSupportForum) blocks out any works that might be curses or vulgar words. If they are from Microsoft, they are safe to keep.

Make sure to close any open browsers you have. Check and fix the following in HijackThis (make sure not to miss any):

O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3482612A-B46A-0FB2-800B-6C5579D52948} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ucny.dll

O9 - Extra button: Real.com - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\Shdocvw.dll
O16 - DPF: {1E2941E3-8E63-11D4-9D5A-00902742D6E0} (iNotes Class) - https://atl1.mycwportal.com:833/iNotes.cab

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ucny.dll

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Please download Adaware and install it. Make sure to update it when you run it. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

After that’s done, restart and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it’s clean.

See if that will allow you to update. If you didn't, there may be something blocking it. Did you uninstall ZoneAlarm? If you did, reinstall it again. If you didn't, make sure to go into the Programs tab and allow access for the following:

AVG
Spybot

That should fix it.

Latest HJT Log

Here is my latest HJT Log. The file in question was G E A R S E C . E X E. It's a file with a 2001 date, version 1.0.0.3 made by Gear Software. I went ahead and just renamed it for the time being. Thanks for all your help. Seems everything is pretty good right now.
