I have a very strange problem on my machine. I just cannot run an executable anymore.

I tried to create a HijackThis log, but it won't run.

I tried to look in the registry, but it won't run.

MS applications are running, such as Outlook, and Excel, but every addin or macro enabled workbook that Excel tries to open gets rejected with the message ...You may be encoutering this message because an anti-virus program is not allowing the file to open.

I have ESET Smart Security, but this is throwing up an error that it cannot connect to the kernel.

I suspect a process called pp10.exe, and have googled this, but many sites are suggesting I downloaded their specialist removal tool, and I admit to be very wary.

On last piece of info. I use FireFox, but IE keeps firing up and telling me that I have viruses, and again telling me to download some app to remove them. Again I am sceptical.

Can anyone tell me where to begin to resolve this issue?
