What sata drivers are you using?
It's very possible there are no drivers made for XP and a H77 chipset.

As I said, I previously added RST (Rapid Storage Technology ) drivers (f6flpy-x86_11.2.0.1006.zip Version: 11.2.0.1006). These are supposed to work.

I seriously doubt you will get xp to work properly, since there are no drivers so suggest you go back to either win 7 or win8.

Installs the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (AHCI) driver version 11.2.0.1006 for Intel® Desktop Boards.

You don't have a desktop board, laptop components are highly proprietary to the manufacturer and standard drivers more often then not simply don't work with them.

OK, I accept that I can't load XP Pro (32) on to a newer HP laptop. So what late model laptop brand(s) will still allow XP Pro to be installed ?? (3rd generation i7 systems for example)

Dell,Acer,Samsung but again you need to check this is research for you to do as you are the one picking, once you have some models then we can help find out more info.

XP is now unsupported, there are no new models on the market claiming support.
The last ones I remember seeing where in 2012 were Dell Latitudes and I think they were 2011 gen 1 i series cpu's on H55 chipsets, from memory we had some trouble with video driver support and were able to use IDE mode for the sata controllers. They are now all running Win7 pro and IE 8

Why do you need to run XP rather then using XP mode in Win7 pro?

XP mode is designed to allow you to run older software that would not run on Vista/Win7 it's like running XP on a virtual machine most of the features and feel is there but it's not meant to replace Win7 as the main OS.
