. . and welcome to the forum

What are you using to attempt the install?

Have you booted from the Vista DVD, deleted, then created new partition(s)?

i am attempting to boot from the os disk that came with my computer. but i get that error message.
i am not extremely computer savy walk me through that and i will try it anyway if you think it will work
What does it say on the DVD? . . Is it a Gateway disc or a Microsoft Disk? if it's a GAteway recovery disc, it will need the files on the recovery partition to complete the install.
yeah i have the recovery partion and i have contacted gateway with no luck. its a gateway disc
OK . . how about some history . . why are you wanting to reinstall? . . Is this the original hard drive? Why does GAteway say it cannot be done with their disc?
they say the information is on the recovery partition but everytime i try to install it says something is missing

system is slow i have tried every vista tweak, bought numerous virus scans, stay updated (including live onecare) and basically i am tired of being bogged down. its either this or downgrade to xp before its discontinued

then why don't you just hit the funtion button that says recover my pc when you boot up your computer? for me its F5 or something... can't you just recover your PC without the disc?

Have you run diagnostics on the hard drive?

How much memory do you have?

Did HP say anymore about why their restore would not work?
