I installed the newest Ubuntu and everything seems to be working but I can't install any updates or any new applications. this is what i get every time :

(preceeding information omitted)
Selecting previously deselected package libstdc++6-4.6-dev.
(Reading database ... 55%dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
reading files list for package 'linux-image-3.0.0-15-generic-pae': Input/output error
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

everything installs fine up until this point. I am a bit new at linux still so i apologize if the reason for the error is simple.
thanks for any help
