Why is the safely remove hardware icon in my system tray and how do I get rid of it? How did it get there in the first place? It keeps showing up and disappearing even though I have not used it.

You can try clicking on start, run, and type in MSCONFIG. Click on the startup tab and uncheck the offending program.

That icon appears if you have a removable peripheral like a USE device, It is a safety device. USB devices can be hot swapped, but some others can't as you know.

As far as I know the only way to get rid of the icon is to right-click the notification area and select properties. Under the Notification area heading, click Customize. Find the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select Always hide in the Behavior column next to it.

Press ok to apply and save.

Maybe someone else has some info on this.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. It disappears when you have no hot pluggable hardware running.
