Can't connect to internet

Hi!

I have two computers at home connected the router ( Speedstream 6520 )

1st computer connected to the 6520 uses Windows 98 SE (I know I know…)
Has a D-Link DFE 538 TX 10/100 adapter
Connected directly with the Cat5 cable

2nd computer connected to the speedstream is Windows XP
Connected directly with Cat5 cable

The 1st computer used to connect just fine for the past year. Then this past week it is not connecting to the internet any more. The XP computer continues to work just fine.

I couldn’t ping my router 192.168.2.1 or get to it via the browser. The XP computer can do this no problems.

After speaking to tech support at the ISP, they changed a few things and I can now ping the router 192.168.2.1 but still not through the browser.

I still can't ping other IP, www.google.com or anything through the browsers

Ipconfig /all shows:

Ethernet adapter :

Description . . . . . . . . : D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter

Physical Address. . . . . . : 00-11-95-5E-25-B1
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
Primary WINS Server . . . . :
Secondary WINS Server . . . :
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . :
Lease Expires . . . . . . . :

There is no firewall/zonealarm on it now.
I’ve tried both IE and Firefox

I’ve done AVG, spybot, disk clean, crap cleaner, ad aware, cwshredder, hijack this (sent the log to be analyzed and no issues).

I’d really appreciate any help on this!!! Let me know if you need any other info.

Thanks,

Andy

The problem appears to be that you have DHCP disabled, turn on automatic IP and DNS addresses in the W98 machine, I think you'll find it works much better.
Hi!

Thanks for your quick reply.

When I put on automatic IP address option in the TCP/IP of the 10/100 adapter, then rebooted:

Ipconfig /all shows:

Ethernet adapter :

Description . . . . . . . . : D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter

Physical Address. . . . . . : 00-11-95-5E-25-B1
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 169.254.231.113
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . :
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.255
Primary WINS Server . . . . :
Secondary WINS Server . . . :
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . : 01 21 07 7:59:14 AM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . :

When I try to renew:

C:\WINDOWS>ipconfig /renew_all
IP ConfigurationError

DHCP Server Unavailable: Renewing adapter ""

*I'm not sure where the automatic DNS is you mentioned?
*Do I need to do anything with the WINS tab?

Thanks,
Andy

Update!
So I found another D-Link 10/100 card and I figured I'd give it a shot to rule that out.

Installed new D-Link card

Ipconfig /all shows:

Ethernet adapter :

Description . . . . . . . . : D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 Adapter

Physical Address. . . . . . : 00-11-95-5E-20-01
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.11
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
Primary WINS Server . . . . :
Secondary WINS Server . . . :
Lease Obtained. . . . . . . : 01 21 07 8:48:37 AM
Lease Expires . . . . . . . : 01 24 07 8:48:37 AM

BUT I still can't ping 192.168.2.1
and I still can't browse to 192.168.2.1

Any ideas?! I'd really appreciate your help!

Thanks,

Andy

Well, you obviously made progress, since your machine now finds the DHCP server and gets an IP address.

At this point, is appears you might have a firewall configuration issue, since there is connectivity to the router. This is the W98 machine, right?
Hi John!

Thanks for your help.

I don't have a firewall on there (I had zonealarm but took it off in case that was the problem)

What I ended up doing was using the ISP's install disc and did a reinstall.

That did the trick!

I guess bottom line was the 10/100 card crapped out?

Thanks again,

Andy
