I'm currently posting from another computer as I can't even get on to this website from mine.

I downloaded AVG free 8.0 a few weeks ago but have only just got around to uninstalling McAfee and installing AVG in its place. I noticed when I installed AVG that it couldn't connect to the update server. I tried going to the website (www.grisoft.com) but got the "Cannot connect" page. This happened in both Firefox (my main browser) and IE (which I never use).

I did some google searches to see if anyone had similar problems and noticed that I couldn't connect to a lot of these websites, which were to do with antivirus programs in the main. I hopped on to this computer to see if it had the same problems but the websites load up fine on here.

I've tried scanning with AVG numerous times and have also used Spybot Search & Destroy along with Spyhunter and Adaware 2007 free but to no avail. These programs I had downloaded before this problem started.

I had downloaded an old game called Dopewars 2.2 by the now defunct Beermat Software. This came bundled with GAIN, but as far as I have found I have managed to remove this from my system.

For the last couple of days I have also been getting two programs showing up in the task bar on startup - Belkinwcui (or similar, it's to do with my wireless adaptor) and mixer.exe (to do with my soundcard). However when I click them to bring them up and close them, nothing happens. I tried right-clicking and closing them but that doesn't work either. The only way to get rid of them is to kill them from Windows Task Manager. Killing the Belkin one does not affect my internet.

I'm running Windows XP Home, with SP2 and am fully updated to the best of my knowledge. Here is the Hijack This log (plus the extra.txt from DSS):

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription.

Please save this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding.
Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

------------------------------------------------------

Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate.

Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Kindly follow my instructions and please do no fixing on your own or running of scanners unless requested by a helper.

Please note that tools are best run from the desktop. Easier to find and perform specialized functions which may be required. Save to the Desktop and then Run from the Desktop. Thanks.

I see you have SpyHunter installed on your system. This application was previously listed as a rogue program because of deceptive advertising. Please read here

Although no longer listed as such, we recommend uninstalling it via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel and downloading antispyware programs that have proven themselves tried and true. See here for a list of trustworthy antispyware products.

If you decide to uninstall it, also delete this Folder if it still exists:

C:\Program Files\Enigma Software Group

------------------------------------------------------

I see you have P2P software ( µTorrent ) installed on your machine. We are not here to pass judgment on file-sharing as a concept. However, we will warn you that engaging in this activity and having this kind of software installed on your machine will always make you more susceptible to re-infections. It may be contributing to your current situation. This page will give you further information.

Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

References for the risk of these programs are here, here, and here.

I would strongly recommend that you uninstall it, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove this program, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you decide to uninstall µTorrent, also delete these Folders if they still exist:

C:\Documents and Settings\Jimm1\Application Data\µTorrent
C:\Program Files\µTorrent

Please download SDFix and Save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click SDFix.exe
  • Click Run
  • Click Install to extract the files to the Windows Directory drive, typically C:\SDFix
------------------------------------------------------

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, start pressing the F8 key. In some systems, this may be the F5 key.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
  • Login on your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.
------------------------------------------------------

  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double-click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will now remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds.
  • Please be patient while it runs. When finished, it will prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the C:\SDFix folder as Report.txt
  • Post that log in your next reply.
------------------------------------------------------

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to your desktop. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware may require a reboot to complete removals. After a reboot, if required, post that saved log in your next reply.

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall HijackThis 1.99.1 via Add or Remove Programs in your Control Panel and delete your current version(Jimm1.exe).

Please download HijackThis and Save it to your Desktop.

Alternate link

This program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double-click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Please post the HijackThis log in your next reply. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

C:\SDFix\Report.txt
Malwarebytes log
new HijackThis log

If you have any questions along the way...STOP and ask them before proceeding.
