You'll need to make enough free space on both partitions before you can resize them, check gparted's documentation. You should also defrag both partitions.
I would backup all the valuable data before starting the resizing process, if something goes wrong you'll lose all your files. External hard drives are cheap nowadays, it's not a good idea to keep all your data on a single hard drive anyway (physical failures happen).
55GB should be more than enough for the system drive, you could also install some programs on the other partition or move your documents folder there.
