Hello, Im new to the board here and im having terrible problems trying to burn cd's on my box here is the problem..

win xp (home)
amd 1.4gig processor
samsung cd-r/rw SW 22-4B
40 gig hd
128 mb of ram (could it be a memory prob)

First problem i had was trying to rip a cd using a prog called "audiograbber" i got nothing but "ASPI" errors, I ran a utility called "forceaspi" it removed and reinstalled all my aspi layers to the most stable versions, to no avail.

Second, I would try to burn a mp3 cd using "Nero burning rom" to no avail also, it freezes when the cd burning reaches 4% and nothing else.

Finally, when i try to play an audio cd the cd player reports that there is no audio cd in the drive, the cd rom will read and play software cd's just not any audio ones.

I have went to the device manager, uninstalled and reinstalled the cd drive, to no avail, tried to find the latest drivers to no avail, and now i dont know what I can do short of actually swapping out the cd drive for a known good one to diagnois my problem.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I would do what you suggested about swapping out the cdrom with a known good one. To me it seems like a hardware problem not a software. Check all your connection and try moving the IDE cable from secondary to primary. Remove any other device that is on that IDE cable. Hope this helps.

I agree, short of trying a known good cd rw there is not much you can do, you can try to remove the ide controller and the cd rw in device manager and try to let it detect it again, but it sounds more like a hardware problem then a software.
