Just took over admin duties for an old MS 2000 network. I am
trying to add an XP workstation.
I cannot see any devices on the network when I try to browse the
network and I can only ping the new workstation and the router.
I added the user to active directory and turned off the windows
firewall and norton firewall that were running on the new
machine. Some of the other workstations on the network are also
peer to peer. I also cannot see either of the two network
printers when I try to add them to the new machine. When I
browse from any of the other machines, I can see the server and
other workstations.

Any ideas why I can't see any of the devices on the network. I
confured the connection the same as on the other XP machines.

wins

Try adding the server ip to the WINS section in network config.

If no difference, does it have File & printer sharing enabled?

You need to join the computer to the domain.
Right click My Computer, click Properties, click the Computer Name tab, and input all information here. (computername, domain, etc.) It will prompt you to restart after you are done.

got into domain but

I am now getting the login box and successfully logging into the domain. I can now browse down to the domain, but don't see anything under it. Don't see the server or other workstations that I can see on other machines. Can't see chare drives and it has locked up the network connection p;roperties and the computer name and domain properties in system. Is there something configured wrong on the server?

what happen

Now that I can log into the domain, I am unable to not log in. In control panel\system the process for changing the computer name or domain are grey out. Under network connections properties the client and tcp-ip are locked. When I go to users it won't let me log it. An y ideas why everything is locked up. I have a problem and can't log in local and when I log into the domain, I can't browse to anything except the domain. Nothing shows up under it though it does on all the other workstations. I created a user and computer and everything looks the same? Any Ideas?

Why when I log on to the domain do these things lock up. It doesn't happen on any other workstation. I didn't set the computer up. I hope the tech that did has the admin password. I can't log into users with either of the local cli ents he set up even though they both said administrator and had no password,
