Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi... you're my last hope.

My troubles started when all programs on my laptop froze. I rebooted. After that I can't access my files anymore. Browsers and some other apps won't start, while others work normally. If I try to start, for example, IE - I can see it among the running processes but something is blocking it from starting propperly. If I try to browse files through a program that starts, the program freezes and I can't kill it.

Virus right? That's what I thought too.

I'm writing this call for help from the fail-safe mode, where I thankfully have none of the above mentioned problems.
Tried system restore to several different dates, well before the problems began. When that didn't work I ran HijackThis and went through the log trying to find something... but I can't spot anything that shouldn't be there.

I must be blind. If someone else could have a look at this maybe they'll be able to see something my tired eyes have missed. I'm at my wit's end here.
Many many thanks in advance for your time.

Sorry for triple posting. Have no idea if the resident experts have a system for dealing with topics chronologically or what... there has however been a development:

Now I can't even boot up in fail-safe mode. It stops booting before I've gotten to the part where you pick profiles. It starts loading things and then it stops on an all black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

I guess the week-end wasn't the best time to break down if I wanted help. I can wait. It would however be comforting to know if anyone is looking at my problem or if my topic is lost in the shuffle. :)

Fourth post in a row... again sorry, but just in case someone has the same problems I had I wanted to post a possible solution:

Try re-registering dll's that might cause these syptoms. Shells, explorer...

This did it for me: regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll

Everything is back to normal now. Feel free to close this topic.
