Hi guys. Im working on my buddys dell laptop (e1501). He said it was really slow and the fan wasnt working correctly because it was making a noise. So i ordered and installed a new fan and the sound went away. Now I want to speed up his pc but cant boot into windows. I know its Vista Sp1. I can get to the welcome screen but thats it. I cant even get into Safe mode it just hangs with a black screen and safe mode lettering on the sides. Any ideas? He doesnt even have the OS cd.

I don't have any disks with this laptop. Would any Dell disk work? I am trying to locate a Vista CD so I can try and repair the OS.

Well I looked around but no luck with the dell cd's. I am waiting on a Vista CD but can I try anything else while waiting?

using any vista cd that is bootable. go into repair. run command console. run chkdsk /f c:
running chkdsk in repair mode, without any arguments, from dvd boot will only chkdsk the ram drive created by the dvd boot . lol.

Finally got the Vista cd. I am in the command prompt and I see X:\Sources>

Fixmbr wont work as a command. Chkdsk came back with no bad sectors

edit bootsec.exe and the command is now working.
