can't access USB (F drive) or CD/DVD, camera not recognized

Hi,
I have an HP Pavilion 2317 running Vista SP2, business edition. I'm not sure when this problem started but I just realized I was having a problem. A while back, I tried to open a flash drive, and got an access denied message. Having burnt out my share of flash drives, I assumed I'd just zapped another. Now I'm not sure that's what happened. I just tried to load pix from my camera, which I have done many times before and the computer could not even find the device. When I looked to see why, I found that I was no longer the owner of that drive and the message was "user could not be displayed" and when I tried to take control, I could not, that was denied.

I tried to obtain access through sharing but couldn't get in that way either. I then tried my CD/DVD drive and the same thing happened. I have control of my C drive, but no access to any of the external drives.

I wish I knew how many Vista updates there have been since I noticed this initially but all I can say is it's been several months. I may have had a virus or malware that was introduced around the same time, but when I realized what it was, I immediately ran my virus program (eset), and then did a restore point to make sure. My antiviral program seemed to have caught it and isolated it so that probably has nothing to do with it, but you never know.

I've read a bunch of threads on this and other fora, but I can't find an answer. I've run safe mode and can't figure it out either. Along with this, it seems my plugnplay is also missing so somehow I cannot now access external ports.

However, interesting: I could do a backup (it came up as g drive) and my mouse works, though there is no plug and play when I plug it back in and sometimes it says the computer doesn't recognize the device when I first plug it in.

Anyone have any suggestions? How do I get control of my USB hubs?

thanks

Hi -

Check the Device Manager for red/ yellow flags -
START | type devmgmt.msc

See if Problem Reports has anything on the USBs -
START | type perfmon

only problem is this is my husband's camera, and I guess it is since that time that my camera and DVD/CD have quit functioning. do I need to do a restore point to before that date? I can't figure out where to find another pnp driver since the Microsoft website is so much fun to use :upset:

Additional help would be appreciated. I have a CD in my driver right now that is not recognized at all.

thanks, mal
