CanoScan LiDE 110; buttons don't work

When I press the physical buttons on the scanner ("PDF," "Auto Scan," "Copy," and "E-mail"), at best they launch the Canon MP Navigator EX software, but don't automatically start any of the indicated functions. I've read the manual, and checked the Canon site to confirm that I have the latest driver and software versions. Any suggestions?
