Hallo

I started my computer and got a message saying that there was a cable unplugged for my internet connection. The cables were all correctly plugged in, but it appears that my usb driver is missing for that port. As I have no internet connection, I cannot get a driver off the net. I then thought I would reformat my c drive and reinstall windows XP SP2, but when I restarted my computer, I had no option to boot from cd. Can anyone pleae help?:upset:

How do you connect to the internet? (USB or Ethernet)

Look in Device Manager. Do you see any entries with ?'s or !'s

In order to boot to the WinXP cd you will need to set the system to boot from the cd drive you can do this by changing the boot order in the bios.

Hi tadpole90 and welcome to TSR

Re-installing XP to get a driver is lots of work. Could you download it to another computer and then transfer it to your computer? You said that your CD drive would't boot, but you didn't say it wouldn't work.

If you really want to re-install XP, you will need to do the boot order change as makinu1der2 mentioned. To get into the BIOS, you will have to hold down a key at boot time to get into the BIOS. Normally the DEL key but could be F1, F2, or other are used to get into the BIOS. If you don't know which key, tell us what model computer you have or what motherboard if homemade computer.

Have a nice day and best regards,

Hi

Thanks to you both for your replies. In reply to your questions, I plug a cable from my VSAT dish into a USB port, I have a LAN connection that uses an ethernet. I have been into the BIOS, and booting from CD is enabled, but I am not getting the option at startup. I had looked in Device manager and there is a yellow exclamation mark by the usb device, and in properties it says no driver is installed. I do not know the name of the driver. I am using and Intel P4 1.7 GHz desktop. I have been to the intel site, but they only list recent drivers. I tried "'Driver Genius"' software, but the computer needing the driver has to be connected to the net.

PS I have just finished reformatting my c drive, and installed Windows XP(my CD ROM is working) and that driver is still missing. Now I am really stumped!!!!

Hi tadpole90,

The driver would be associated with your motherboard, thus the place to get them would be from the motherboard manufacturer's website. Those drivers normally come with a new computer or motherboard on a separate CD. It will include things like audio, usb, raid, and other drivers. If you bought a brand name computer, the drivers would be on the recovery CD.

One good way to install the driver is to have Windows to search for it. To do this, uninstall the USB port branch from the tree in the Device Manager. On reboot, Windows will complain and look for a usable driver.

If you know your Motherboard make and model, you should be able to get that group of drivers from the board maker's website. I repeat myself.

Hope this helps,

Hi tadpole90,

If my memory serves me, the motherboard name and model is marked on the side of the PCI slot at the bottom. Normally you can't see the thing unless you pull the motherboard out....lot of work just for a number. You might be able to use a small mirror to see it.

If you are lucky, it might be on the face of the motherboard.
