I've come up against this a few times in various places.
I can connect wirelessly fine, and if I input the I.P, gateway and DNS details in manually. But for some reason the router won't issue me an I.P when the computers network card is set to obtain the details automatically.
What's the exact make and model of the router and modem? What is the version and patch level of Windows.
Please do this with the cable attached to the router and computer.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt:
In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:
Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.
IPCONFIG /ALL
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
Have you tried connecting the cable directly to the modem? Remember, you have to power cycle the modem to change the attached device.
