OK, lets start by saying that I am hopeless with computers so please don't feel like you're talking down to me by using the simplest of terms.

I have problems with one desktop which runs Vista and one laptop which runs XP. Both have previously worked but have now gone haywire for some reason.

We'll start with the desktop on which I use a LAN connection. When I try to log onto the internet it's just not connecting at all. When I tried going in through MSN I was getting the error message that my IP address is invalid. I find that highly confusing as it started up and connected fine on Wednesday morning and it was when I got home on Wednesday night that I could not connect. Any suggestions as to what I can try?

Then onto the piece of junk laptop. I am connected directly to the cable modem via a lan connection. I should be able to be wirelessly connected but I can't even link up via lan through the router. My house mate says his works fine. When I try to log on wirelessly or via the router and go through MSN I am getting DNS error and gateway.

Pretty much I am at my wits end.....

Any help at all would be great.

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

What country are you located in.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
What is the expected Upstream/Downstream speed for your ISP Connection?
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Make and model of your computer.
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP-Home (or XP-Pro), SP1-SP2, Vista, etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.




Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?

If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?




On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands:

PING 216.109.112.135

PING yahoo.com

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

OK, lets start with the laptop since its online.

When I unplug and try to connect wirelessly:

I am using a cable at the moment which works direct to the modem but not via the router.

My housemate tells me that his laptop is connecting wirelessly with no problems (its not here at the moment for me to try it)

This IPCONFIG shows a wired connection directly to a modem, hence the public IP address. How is all of this connected?

BTW, one reason you can't connect wirelessly is you have DHCP disabled, that will never work with the settings you have.

Enable DHCP steps:

Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.

• Double-click the Connection icon of the connection you wish to modify to open the Local Area Connection Status window. Obviously, you will be picking the wireless connection.
• Click the Properties button to open the Local Area Connection Properties window.
• Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
• Click the Properties button to open the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window.
• TCP/IP Properties window, IP Address tab
• Select Obtain an IP address automatically.
• Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.
• Click OK to return to the Local Area Connection Properties window.
• Click OK to return to the Network Connections window.
