I have a website I want to access (www.freestockcharts.com) but it is not loading because something on the computer is conflicting with it. I have turned all firewalls off, etc. and still no luck. I contacted their admin and they could not figure it out either even with some log utility tools - they said it wasn't a firewall issue. It is not a router issue either as we have a 2nd laptop in the house that connects to the website successfully.

The website says the followingL
to use freestockcharts.com you must have ports 943 and 4502-4520 open for data.freestockcharts.com(64.239.246.135).
I ran netstats -an and I cannot find any of those ports blocked so I am not sure what is left to check. I uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight, which this website needs and that didn;t help either.

I tried a couple of tcp tools but none of the ports are used so not sure what to troubleshoot now...

Any ideas?

Do you have a router? What they're asking is for you to open these ports through the router and any software firewalls it would appear. I went to the site, and I didn't see a FAQ, do you have the page where you saw this comment?

Yeah, there are no ports blocked on the router at all...that's why it works on Laptop 2 but not on laptop 1.
When the software firewalls are turned off, the site doesn't work on laptop 1 either.
Actually, even when the software firewall is ON for laptop 2 the site works correctly.
Something is conflicting with it somehow and it's not router or firewall related. I thought it might be port forwarding and so changed the IPs around so laptop 1 always had 192.168.1.2 (instead of 1.3) but it's not that either.

I think it's a javascript message hence the message can't be seen. I've put up a screenshot here: www.sidekicker.net/error.jpg

It's not the ports being blocked on the router, it's the fact that you may have to port forward ports through the router to the specific machine.

How did you get the one laptop working?

Let's see this for each of the two laptops.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

That's the thing...I didn't do anything to get the 2nd laptop working, no port forwarding or anything. That's why I changed the IP addresses round on the computer but that didn't help.
I looked at port forwarding before but it didn't make any difference.

Their message indicates you need to do port forwarding. If you have uPnP running on the router, it may allow at least one machine to connect. I don't know why the other one doesn't connect when the first one is not active.

I set up port forwarding before to forward the ports to 192.168.1.2 and it didn't work - I'm pretty sure it's something on my laptop conflicting.

If I had uPnP running wouldn't it by default let the 1st IP address connect? ie 192.168.1.2. Doesn't seem to be a logical reason why it would let 192.168.1.3 connect?

Netgear WGR614v9
Also, their tech support said port forwarding wasn't necessary.

Edit: Just retried port forwarding and also port triggering separately...didn't help. Got to be something on here :4-dontkno

Here is netstat -an
I can't see anything hogging those port numbers:

I'm at a loss. At this point I'd contact the web site tech support and ask for specific guidelines as to their requirements.
Yeah, they told me their log utility couldn't find anything wrong but that it was being blocked. I question the validity of their log utility when it couldn't ping google though and I could pin google from the cmd line.
Then they said, uninstall all your programs one by one until it works !!!!!

Well, you can use MSCONFIG to disable startup aplications in groups and it'll be a lot quicker than uninstalling them.
I'll start with Avira but I doubt that's the issue.
There could be a load of services running as well but this will prevent some vital parts of the system from working won't it?
I assume I should leave all Microsoft services running?

I would be interested to hear if you encountered a similar problem accessing another MS Silverlight charting package: http://www.zignals.com/main/stock_charts/stock_charts.aspx

I'm just wondering if there is some aspect to freestockcharts.com site that may impinge on ours?

Thank you,
Declan

Your site works. Do you not use the same port numbers? If you use SIlverlight and it works, then it is pretty clear to me that it is the other port numbers blocking me from freestockcharts 4502-4520.
However, your site doesn't have intraday charts (10m timeframes, etc.)
