I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. I am trying to access a computer on my network using Windows XP SP2. When I click on the XP computer in "network" it asks me for a username and password. I'm clueless as to what username and password it wants. Working in reverse I can see my "shared" folder on my Vista Machine just fine from my XP machine, it does not ask for any username and password in that direction, but can't go the other way.

Create an account on the XP machine with the same name/password as is used to login to the Vista machine. This should eliminate the password prompt.

It did not.

I made sure that my accounts on both machines matched names and passwords. It still asks me for my name and password.

When I type in my name, for example, crumby and type in my password and hit the OK button the name line changes to:

User Name: Rex\Crumby
Password: .......

(where Rex is the name of the computer I'm on)

Then a dialog box pops up that says:

Login Unsuccessful:
Windows in unable to log you on.
Be sure that your user name and
password are correct.

I have made sure that my user name and password are correct. However, I see a discrepancy in the naming of the Workgroup between the two computers. How can I change the name of the Workgroup on the Vista Computer?

Actually the Vista "Help" worked fine in answering that question.

Fixing the Group Name didn't help a bit. As a matter of fact now the "Network" folder in Windows Explorer produces two computers of each name. And the Vista Computer shows to still be on the old Workgroup though I corrected it. Elsewhere it shows the corrected Workgroup name.

Still asks for a User Name and Password and will not accept them.

Remember that Vista defaults to not allowing file sharing if the account has no password. Have you turned off password protected sharing on the Vista computer? Have you enabled simple sharing on the XP machine?

The account I am trying to connect from on the Vista Machine is indeed password protected. I do not believe I have turned off password protected sharing on the Vista. Should I, to see if it will work?

Yes, it does. I can get on the XP Machine into my account fine by entering the password. But when I try to enter the username and password while trying to log in from the Vista Machine it doesn't recognize it.
