START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | Right-click on cmd.exe | select Run as Administrator - the black cmd prompt screen will appear - type -

sfc /scannow

Upon completion, reboot to allow system to repair files it cannot while the hard drive is mounted (in use).

I did this sfc. It did not fix my problem. Is there another way?

Thanks in advance.

Hello tony007

Sfc should replace any missing or corrupt system files.

There is a "Repair" option, but it is different from a "Repair" of XP.
The Vista Repair is performed by Upgrading over your existing installed Vista. All files snd data should remailn safe, but it is always best to backup anything you can`t afford to lose.

Here is how to do it.

Note
You cannot do the Repair if SP1 is installed and is not on your Vista DVD.

Hello Femme Fatale

There are other repair options on the Vista DVD which can be used to try to fix other types of problems.

What is your problem? Is it missing/corrupted files too?

Well I was installing the os and I came to a page that only gave two options upgrade install which was greyed out and clean install which is what I had to do. Originally I had xp pro on this machine I am wondering why the upgrade install was greyed out I may want to do that in future. These questions are for nothing I am trying to do now but for future reference.

if it's had any updates from w/update it is no longer the same
used to use the upgrade to recover when beta testing vista after i had botched something
but they were never on long enough for update before the next beta release was available
apart from running the repair from the dvd i don't know another way,i found useing the dvd repair was hit and miss as far as success with it went

Can I run the os dvd until the options to upgrade or do a clean install are shown. I want to see if the upgrade option is still greyed out, I dont want to do a clean install but can I cancell from this point without losing anything? I was running xp when the upgrade option was greyed out it may be ok now because I am running vista.
