I have Windows Xp and I got a virus and it really screwed up my computer so I got my windows recovery CD and did a re-install but kept my data files. I guess I still had the virus because now my computer won't even get to the desktop and restarting in safe mode didn't work. Also tried doing a complete re-install of everything and erasing all files but when i did it it said it was initializing then it gave me the blue error screen and everytime it says "c000021 fatal system error". I contacted Gateway online chat support, they told me to try to take out each memory chip one at a time to see if they were somehow damaged, but it still did the same thing. So then they told me to contact a technician, but I don't exactly have enough money to go that route. Does anyone know of anything else I could do to try to get my system up and running again? Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

Enter bios (I think it is F2 but not sure when it first turns on)and make sure your bootup devices is set to cd rom first, floppy drive next(if you have one installed) , harddrive third

Go here to test your ram first:

http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

I would suggest doing atleast 3 passes on each stick of ram (having just 1 stick installed at a time during the testing). I understand too that this can be a timely process also but has to be done to rule out the ram before we proceed any further to the problem.

Get yourself a HD utility here:

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

If however they dont have a harddrive utility for your harddrive then choose seatools utility it usually works for other harddrives as well, note: the harddrive utility can save sometime as opposed to 3rd party programs, however if that wont work either then download one of these programs to wipe the harddrive:

dban: http://www.dban.org/download
killdisk: http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Now once you have downloaded the file, burn it as an image to a cd disc.

1. run harddrive test
2. run full erase of harddrive
3. now remove cd and boot up pc.....should get disc error now or cannot find operating system message. this is good
4. now put your xp cd disc in and turn on pc
5. it will ask you press enter to boot from cd, go ahead and press enter
6. there you go, it will take about 50 or so min to install maybe less depends on your pc.

Report back with results or problems please?
