Had a little difficulty choosing where to post this as it involves both WINNT and Windows XP but, as the computer in question is running Windows XP, I thought this would be appropriate.

Just had a great experience in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help section! See Hoping for help with pop-ups, volume settings and phantom music. Thanks sjpritch25!

In the process, I noticed that the computer has a C:\WINNT directory and a G:\WINDOWS directory. Is this normal for a computer that is running Windows XP Home?

The other oddity is that, when the computer boots, there is an option to load XP Home or XP Pro. Typically Home is loaded but I tried to load Pro, just to see what would happen, and I got a blue memory dump screen.

What I'd like to know is, if this is not a normal setup (and I don't think that it is), how do I get rid of the excess OS and set the computer up to simply boot into XP Home?

I know, I know.. why get rid of Pro and keep Home, right? Well he's been using Home all along, so all of his "settings" like favorites and Start Menu layout and whatnot, have all been setup in Home. If it's easy to move these to the Pro installation and just boot to Pro all the time, I'm willing to do that but the blue memory dump screen I got when I booted into Pro makes me leary of choosing Pro over Home in this case.

My system is running Windows XP Pro, with two hard drives, and the only Windows directory I have is C:\WINDOWS. This is what leads me to believe that his setup is not normal and I look forward to getting some advice.

If I had to make an educated guess I'd say that at some point in time that machine had windows 2000 or nt installed and someone upgraded to xp pro. Then at a latter date someone installed xp home and created a dual boot. Then after that some one tried to uninstall the pro version and since it was a upgrade it left behind folder of previous os and now you still get the prompt for xp home and pro because the boot.ini file hasn't been repaired.

From run type msconfig. on the boot.ini tab look for chack all boot paths. Then when?if invalid path is found repair.
If there is nothing in the winnt folder that is needed it can then be deleted.

Ok thanks, I'll have a look in msconfig for any invalid paths.

I'm not sure if Windows was installed more than once, but I'm guessing so.

Just wasn't really sure if I could simply delete the unused folder or if there was some kind of uninstall process I had to go through.

Thanks!
