burner HL-DT-ST DWD+-RW GWA4164B

Burner is installed on a Dimension XPS B, Dell PC, Win XP SP3. Driver is Microsoft standard reinstalled via Plug & Play. Firmware is E113, last version from Dell. My burner SW is CDBurnerXP and my DVD player is Media Player Classic-Home Cinema, both freeware.

CD:s are read, played and burned without problems but DVD:s are not even recognized, blank or non-blank. There are several notes on Internet about the drive causing problems but none of the suggested remedies seems to work in my case. Any suggestions? (The SW works fine with my second DVD (ROM) drive i.e. DVDs can be used to supply info, replay video etc.)

If the only problem is DVD's, then I suspect the player is faulty. If it were driver related, the drive would also not be reading CD's.

Time for a new drive.
As above^
You have the classic signs of a failing optical drive.
Suspicions confirmed. I will try another drive
