Hello,
The PC I want to build is going to be for my 13 yr old, and she is just going to use for basic internet and some word documentation. Know as far as cost wise, I'm looking to spend about $300 to $400 give or take.
I built one this summer for about that much. I started with a barebones kit like THIS ONE. I used some bits and pieces from the one it was replacing (30G HD - since supplimented with a 120G and a 250G, DVD drive, CD RW drive, video card, sound card, keyboard, monitor, mouse...) and loaded it with Ubuntu Linux.
I use mine about like your daughter. If you can scavage some useful pieces, it can be done.
On the other hand, two years ago I bought my daughter - also 13 - a Sempron based off brand (Wintergreen??) upgraded the vid card so she could play games and she's happy. I think I spent $300 total.
