Hello there. My name is Wizarduous, and I recently built a new computer from scratch. Everything was fine, up until I found time to start playing games on it. While playing games like Left 4 Dead 2, Minecraft, ect., my computer decides it would rather spit a BSOD in my face and laugh at me.

I've been having this problem for about two weeks now. I tried updating drivers, specifically video drivers, and that didn't work. I just reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled windows, and I'm still getting BSODs. I just finished a 6 hour memtest, which completed 7 passes, and didn't discover any problems. I also ran Prime 95, and ran the small FFT test (no errors discovered) and the blend test (no errors discovered). Finally, I tested my GPU with FurMark. I ran the program until my GPU got to 90C, and there weren't any obvious errors while it was running, or when it completed.

Attached is a .zip with all the stuff the sticky thread asked for. It only has dump files from after I reinstalled windows. The dump files before I reinstalled windows complained about directX11 files, if that is of any use

Also, the performance report says a lot of my hardware is crap. This isn't true, as my computer runs very well. When running games, the FPS is great. Its just that sometimes (actually most of the time), the computer BSODs...

System Specs:
· Windows 7 Ultimate Service Pack 1
· 64-bit
· Retail Version (downloaded from my University for free!)
· System is about a month old
· Current OS installation is a few days old
· AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
· NVIDIA GeForce GTX 465
· BIOSTAR TSeries TA790GXB3 Motherboard
· 650 Watt Power Supply

Please check for firmware updates for your motherboard, GPU and other components. You mentioned that you updated the drivers. There are quite often firmware updates that coincide with driver updates and they are both necessary for stability.

Hmm, well the firmware for my motherboard is up to date. I installed the software that came with it, and running the updater doesn't find anything. So I'm confident that my BIOS is up to date as well

As for my GPU, I'm not sure it really...has...firmware? I'm confused on what I'm trying to do here, or what you're saying. The only thing I can find for GeForce GTX 465 are drivers from NVIDIA.

I haven't been able to find firmware for my processor, CD drives, or any other components out there. Also, these pieces of hardware work fine. At least I think they do

Hello,

You've done most of the tests I typically recommend already; only thing I'd suggest is running SeaTools for the hard drive.

What brand is your PSU?

Do you know of any others in your university with this trouble? Give the tech desk a visit, see if you can find out if there have been many others who have come to them with BSOD troubles, and then find those people and ask what the resolution was. In case you're wondering, I'm trying to identify a possible problem with the Windows version you installed.

Hi, sorry I haven't posted back in a few days. I have been busy. Anyways, I ran the harddrive tool, and it didn't find anything bad, so I think that rules out any hardware issues

As it turns out, there haven't been any complaints about BSODs to the IT department, and the IT guy said the copy that I downloaded should be fine. I have the same version loaded on my laptop, and I'm not getting any BSODs on it

I also have a few more mini dumps for you guys to look at, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks!

EDIT: Also, I'm not sure about the brand on the PSU. Looking at it, there isn't a sticker on it anymore. All I know is it's 650 watts and it runs my computer just fine

Please upload a new report so I can dig deeper into the issues your having.

Here's a recent performance report. I disabled some HD audio stuff to see if it would help with the BSOD problems (this was about a week ago). I still get BSODs, but the number has drastically decreased

Also, chkdsk was clean. Updated the realtek driver as well

As for the xbox controller, I have the newest driver for it already. So not sure how to fix that problem, besides unplugging it

Here are some more BSODs. First, I downloaded the on board audio driver from my mother boards website. Still got a BSOD. Then I just disabled all my sound hardware. Still got a BSOD. Does this rule out any sound hardware as the problem?

I'm starting to think maybe my video card is faulty in some way. Even though it passed the stress test...I dunno.

I've tried pretty much everything and the damn thing keeps crashing on me. This is incredibly frustrating

I've already ran these tests, a few days ago before I even posted here. They all came back clean. I left driver verifier on for 24 hours +, and nothing happened. Heck, I didn't even reset it for 4 days, I just let it sit there while I did other things. I've tested my memory twice now (both for 7+ passes), and the tests came back clean. I've run all the prime95 tests, and no problems

I think at this point, I'm just going to start disabling hardware to see what happens

EDIT: Well, I suppose I didn't actually tell you guys that I ran verifier before, so sorry if my post sounded rude!

Got home from work and tried to get more information on my problem. Basically, it entailed me playing batman in 5 minute intervals waiting for my computer to crash. There's also one minidump from BSODing while playing L4D2 from this morning. Anyways, Here's my nights work

A lot of the crashes have bug check code 0x3b, except for two of them. One of those BSODs took place when I clicked on the start menu. The other one happened while playing batman with only 1x2gb stick of ram in my computer

I think my next step is to find a worthy graphics card to switch mine out for, and see what happens. Maybe I can borrow one from a friend or something...

Also, I'm going to run memtest one more time. I'll be out of the house all day tomorrow, so I can get more than 7 passes, since I usually quit at 7 passes and didn't go any further. I doubt there will be any errors

Anyways, any help is appreciated

You can try running a stress test on your video card and see if it passes

Video Card - Stress Test with Furmark - Windows 7 Forums

Your last dumps weren't driver verified dumps. Are you sure you have it on?

Johnathan_King had asked you before what brand your PSU was and you weren't sure that is was 650watt and it was running your computer just fine. Are you able to pull your PSU out and see if you can find a label with a brand on it?

I'm not sure what else to do. I can have a more experienced person read over the dumps and see what they think is happening.

I've did the verifier tests days ago. I turned it off, because it wasn't finding any driver issues. Like I said, I let it run over night, and kept it running for the days to come. I turned it off probably 3 days ago because it wasn't BSODing on non-Microsoft drivers, I was still just BSODing while playing games. Moral of the story, verifier didn't find anything

Also, I've already ran stress tests on my video card. I ran furmark until my GPU was at 90C, and stopped the test. No errors were reported, and my computer didn't crash during the test

The PSU is 650 watts. I don't know the brand name. I've checked that already. The sticker has been rubbed off

Infact, last night I decided to unplug my video card, and just use my onboard video to see what would happen. After installing the correct drivers for the onboard video card, and removing the drivers for the geforce gtx 465, I still got bsods while playing games (and the games even ran poorly, since my onboard video is terrible). This rules out a video card problem. And just to spite me, my computer is having problems reinstalling the gtx 465 drivers (though, I think I can work around this when I get home tonight).

I suppose the last thing it could be is the motherboard itself, but I don't know how to confirm this. I don't have a spare motherboard laying around, and I'm a poor college student who can't really afford to just buy another motherboard for the hell of it. I suppose it could still be a bad install of windows, but this doesn't make sense to me because I have the exact same version on my laptop, and I have NEVER had a crash on it. Maybe I have a bad SATA cable or something...if only I knew...

As always, any theories are welcome
