Hi -

The zip file contained 2 dump files, yet WERCON clearly shows 55 BSODs in the last 6 weeks beginning suddenly on January 19, 2010. What happened to the other 53 dump files?

The bugchecks on the two dumps -

0xd1 = kernel mode driver attempted improper access of pageable memory. Probable cause = Intel wifi
Code:
[font=lucida console]NETw5s64.sys Tue Sep 15 15:40:39 2009 (4AAFEDB7)
[/font]
Update the 5100 driver. A new version was released on Feb 10; this is only part of the cure.

Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN driver download --> http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Wireless+Networking&ProductLine=Intel®+WiFi+Products&ProductProduct=Intel®+WiFi+Link+5300+and+Intel®+WiFi+Link+5100+products

I saw the 100's of appcrashes in addition to the 55 BSODs that suddenly began on 1-19-2010 - when you installed VMWare. NIS was one of the first to fail -

NIS is the major cause of your app crashes. Remove NIS using the NRT.

Download the Norton Removal Tool (NRT); save to desktop. Then go to desktop, RIGHT-click on the NRT icon and select Run as Administrator. When complete - re-boot.

NRT - ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Reset the Windows Firewall to its default settings -
START | type firewall.cpl | select firewall.cpl above under programs | top-left, select "Restore Defaults"

Install MS Security Essentials --> http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

`

These drivers need to be updated -
Code:
[font=lucida console]
HpqKbFiltr.sys Mon Jun 18 18:13:11 2007 (46770377) - HP filter
jmcr.sys     Thu Jul 17 08:23:53 2008 (487F39D9) -  JMicron JMB38X Flash Media Controller Driver

I dont know what happened to the other blue screens. The only ones i saw were those 2 in the minidump folder, and i didnt delete or see the other minidumps in the folder.

1) i updated all the drivers except for this one "vfs101a.sys Wed Feb 06 21:44:54 2008 (47AA70A6) - Validity vfs101 fingerprint scanner USB driver" i cant seem to find it.

2) Before i uninstall NIS what internet security program would you recommend, as it is currently my antivirus and spyware protection.

Thanks again

Hi -

You are most welcome. Hopefully when said and done - the BSOD epidemic will be done as well.

No big deal about the missing 53 dumps, it just seemed odd to only have 2. It's possible that they were deleted by a cleaner app like CCleaner or other.

I don't have direct evidence that the fingerprint scanner is involved in any of the BSODs; however, past experience tell me that it will become an issue at some point - meaning involvement in a BSOD. If you don't use the fingerprint scanner, go into system services and disable it. Also check the Device Manager - disable it - do not un-install it, because Windows 7 will re-install the driver upon re-boot.

System Services -
START | type services.msc

Device Manager -
START | type devmgmt.msc

Regarding NIS - it's 3rd party firewall is responsible for most of the app crashes that I saw in WERCON. The firewall tends to block local NETBIOS ports causing Windows 7 system services to fail.

As mentioned, try (FREE) Microsoft Security Essentials --> http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Curiosity Q, please - do you recall the system going down/ experiencing problems after VMWare went in?

Regards. . .

I had one more question if someone could help. Its with the Autoplay feature in windows 7. It use to work before but now, every time i insert a USB the Autoplay never pops up for me to chose how to open it. I tried to manually do this by setting up the autoplay to ask me every time but it still doesn't fix the problem. Any idea on how to get Autoplay to work? I like how it makes it easier on me.

Thanks
