Did you check if your laptop is able to run Windows 7 without any hardware or BIOS issues before removing the previous version Windows version? >> check here with the previous version installed: Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

Some hardware may not be compatible or the BIOS may need updating first. Either of those would cause the error you are getting. That's why you should have run the "upgrade advisor" first.

I'm assuming that you did not have this problem with windows xp? Try going into safe mode and see if it works then. (safe mode loads basic and minimal drivers). If it goes into safe mode, I would say you have a driver issue. Make sure you have the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Hope that helps.

Well that def narrows it down then. What are the make and model of the laptop? I had a problem similar on a laptop and I had to disable the SATA support in the BIOS. I had read on another forum that the laptop i was working on didn't like the Sata driver that Windows 7 tries to install and it fixed it and let me install Win7. Maybe its something similar with yours. Either way, the make and model will help narrow down the problem further.

mem test you said are fine and hdd is also fine. Looks like the error msg is happening at very begining phase as per what you have mentioned. i think Windows setup most probably using bios i/o drivers for i/o. You should upgrade the bios to latest version. also did you check the compatiblity of bios itself with win 7?
